3d Term, Week 9 🤩⚓️

15th of March till I fly home on the 22nd!

There we were Monday morning still in Szczecin, Poland, finishing the discharge of the steel coils. There was not much left but enough to take up half a day and wait for the pilot to board so that we could proceed to Riga. This gave us time to prepare the hod, sweep it well, and make sure there were no remaining from the previous cargo in it: bits and pieces of plastic, lashing steel, etc. It goes fast and if you do not pay attention the guys working in our hold would also leave their crap behind that we would have to pick up and clean up for them: wraps of snacks, sweets, papers, empty cans, and bottles of water…. It is often like that. But I am never so happy with it and I often cannot keep my mouth shut for this type of things and I make sure that they pick up all their trash before they finish. Sometimes it is a bit of a fight. But I am right: before the cargo, the hold is clean and ready and after the cargo, the hold should be as clean as possible. Maybe because I am a woman they try to have me there, but I know my voice can sound louder from time to time, and trust me; I do know how to use the sound system when necessary!

We were finally underway to Riga in Ballast. It was a 2-day sail and we would load Sun Flower meal pellets. It looks very much like sugar beet pulp pellets, but it is not the same ;-). We would bring this cargo to Gent in Belgium, which meant a nice few days sailing. Even if we had to pass via the Kiel Channel once again; if we were lucky enough it would not bother us too much in our watch schedules and resting hours. Fingers crossed!

I think this was my first time with this type of cargo…. Let me check. Yes, indeed it was my first time! Now you must be thinking how I checked so fast into my memories for that right? Well, I have a secret. I do not have any memory for such things: cargos, places I have been to, distances, events… No brains at all so I write it down! I have a note on my phone and I write down on each of the trips the distances and cargos we have been transporting…. 😉 especially when onboard Ruyter we tend to go several times to the same harbors and also a few times in the same term! And a few times in the same harbors but not with the same cargo either! Yep. As you can see I can easily get myself confused after a while, so I write it down. To be as precise as I can.

The loading in Riga went quite fast. It was a touch-and-go harbour which is nice because I could easily prepare my handover and take care of the last-minute things. There are always last-minute things to arrange when you come closer to a Dutch or Belgium harbour: deliveries, technical orders…. This time it was our gangway. We were going to receive a new gangway in Gent with a new platform! How cool right? We were all so happy about it because our platforms always got stuck with the gangway. But the reason we would get a new one was not so nice of course… it broke. Well to be more precise, it got literally destroyed by the crane driver in Szczecin…. He did not look where he was driving and ran over it like if it were butter. But it was not as if we had quickly moved our gangway just on his path by surprise right…. I mean, you get it. Shit happens and no one got hurt.

On our way back to Gent, we of course passed via the Kiel Channel and I enjoyed being once again in the locks. It felt like these locks were becoming our familiar second place to be with the ship. I do not mind they do not take long, and I usually try to make fun on the foredeck taking selfies or showing my life on Instagram or just chit-chatting with the AB on deck with me at that time. There are a lot of things to talk about: the way the germans through their heaving line, the way the gangway is set, if we need to take freshwater or not…. Always something to talk about indeed.

How can you not love sunsets at sea? Never bored of it…

I felt like this time the channel was quite busy with more vessels than usual. But I must admit that we were this time in a sort of convey so there were always vessels ahead of us and behind! And perhaps the last times I didn’t see the other vessels because of the darkness of the night… just kidding 🙂 even when it is dark we still see the other ships 🙂

Does it happen to you too that when you know you are going home; I mean obviously I always knew it would be the case; but I mean the moment you have a fixed date, then suddenly everything becomes somehow « lighter » or more « cheerful ». You enjoy way more small things that you do onboard: mooring, cargo, watches…. Like a new you. The same happens when you just join the ship. You are fresh from leave so full of energy if you did not have a bad long travel day. At the end of your term, you are re-energized because you know you will get enough rest once home again so you are not trying to save on some rest or sleep.

Anyways. Kiel Channel and arrival in Gent went quite smoothly. If you do not count the long waiting and drifting at Steenbank; then the locks in Terneuzen… The pilots always seem to postpone the boarding times and the locks always seem to be congested. Every single time. I can understand it is a busy area and if you have bad weather or infrastructure work in the locks, everything is slowed down. Do you have the same?

And then there it was suddenly the end of 9 weeks onboard. And my 3d term turns a page for new shore adventures… till I will join again in 8 weeks.

And say bye to the ship for the next 8 weeks!

2nd Term ~ Week 2. 🚢 ⚓️ ⭐️

Oh, God. I am late again! I think my Mondays only start on Wednesdays…. Or let’s face it. I am either procrastinating or too busy to take 30 minutes before the end of the week to blabber up some lines🤦🏻‍♀️… But I am here! 💪🏻 And time actually does fly! I have the feeling I have just come back on board but I am over 2 weeks now and we have already had quite some miles in, a few cargos and also a crew change already! L., our Engineer flew home and A. came back! I am sure we will soon hear some funny stories from the islands during our meals! #fun

Last week we were sailing to Stockvik 🇸🇪 . We were indeed delayed because of the very strong winds we had to face. We had to slow down to not stop the vessel on every wave.

Upon arrival we were at anchor ⚓️for three days just in the bay it was amazing because very quiet and nice weather too. The wind slowed us down to be able to have a notice to readiness on the expected time. But actually, the harbour said their quay was in maintenance so we couldn’t moor yet. Therefore the anchor days. We haven’t seen any maintenance while we were there. Pity because apparently there are very nice hikes to do around Stockvik 🌳 . Instead, we had the chance to enjoy the fjord and the leaves of the trees starting to turn red 🍂 . It is amazing.

Time at anchor is ideal to do lots of maintenance jobs. I am really up to date which is nice because I can either enjoy the rest of the time or plan what could be improved. I like that. The days were nice and sunny ☀️ and the evenings so cold. We could feel we were up North there. But of course, we couldn’t resist a swim 🏊‍♀️ in the freezing cold water. I guess it was around 6-8 degrees 🥶 ! But it is nice and gives lots of energy. We challenged the trainee and also our Indonesian crew to swim! They all dared. Once. Except for the cook. I went twice 💪🏻👊🏻.

I really enjoy this cold water therapy. To be honest it is way colder than my very cold daily showers 🚿. You should try too! It is very healthy and good for the skin! 😜
After stockvik, I was hoping to go to Sundsval again ( same Fjord) and load wood pulp ( nice clean cargo!) to Spain ( nice sunny warm weather!) but nope. The order first went to Uusikaupunki ( just love these strange Finnish names!) to Sweden. Of course, as a Sophie, I directly made my voyage plans but hey, it would have been too easy: change of plan: we will be loading sugar beet pulp pellets in Liepaja 🇱🇻 . I am sure this was just a sign for me to practice my voyage plannings. But ok. I don’t mind. Just did them again. 🤓
So after tasting the salt, which was really salty; I am curious to taste our next cargo to see if it is very sweet or not. Apparently, it is used for food for animals…. I do not mind being a little crazy about that! 🤪

As I said at anchor, it is always nice to do jobs you do not have the time for. I love launching the MOB boat and going for a short ride. 🚣 I was alone this time but finally could drive at my own pace and sail around the ship for pictures 😉. We also had fun in the engine room 👩🏻‍🔧measuring the valve clearances of the Main Engine. It is always quite some fun. At least for me; and I know for Captain H. as well. Except for this time, our trainee didn’t really like a tiny joke of mine 🤭- wrong jokes happen ha! But when you know me, you know I only like to play around and have fun -so it didn’t end up as nice as I wanted 😂 . I had a nice Sophie moment and just went for another lonely job greasing the anchor winch on the foredeck. 🙄Nice and isolated. If people cannot handle my jokes…even though I wouldn’t kill a fly…. Well then…. I don’t know, they just do not handle them. I think they are funny. 😬I guess we keep on learning always and at all times right? That is my lesson: be aware of my (too) direct teasing. And for the others: just toughen up and do not be so sensitive. 😉 ( mhmm am I sometimes sensitive? 🤔Oh well… life onboard…. It makes us grow faster right? It is all good now.)

1st Term ~ Week 3. ⚓🚢

Of course! If I publish my week 2 almost at the end of week 3 there will be a slight timing problem right?…. and you wouldn’t want me to overload you with my stories and pictures two days in a row…..

End of week 3. Good news is that the engineer and I that both joined at the same time have not brought any unfriendly 🦠 onboard. No symptoms within the crew, this is so relieving🥳 Whatever comes now is not from our ship family but from stevedores or other people that might come on board. In harbours, we are not allowed to go ashore for a walk even if we do not present any symptoms and obviously do not carry it. How do we know is the stevedores have the same restrictions like us. How can we know if they have the same sanitary and social distancing? They do not wear a mask 😷 or respect social distancing… how can We know if we are still safe leaving the harbour?… 🦠 🦠 as if we were the ones bringing little covid-19 with us everywhere we go. Grr, 😖 it’s so frustrating. Oh well…

We stayed 5 days in Sundsvall 🇸🇪, but it was a good stay as we managed to do a lot of good maintenance: a lot of greasing actually, I felt like I was the grease monkey, a job we would usually get as a green hand on tall ships… but such an important task as the wear and tear can become terrible on moving parts and watertight rubbers. We took time to grind, wire brush, clean and regrease aaalllll moving parts we could see: all threads and nipples. This became a pretty big job but also necessary as we found out that some moving parts didn’t have nipples and therefore were not greased… the answer « it has always been like that so greasing is not necessary » is not always the correct answer. When you know who did the maintenance if the ship before she came into captain Harry’s hands… you would probably doubt everything you see around you. I do miss my tall ships though… you can probably tell by the picture in the mast… any opportunity to climb up I take… not even afraid. ⛵️ 😊
I like it when you have time to repair and cross jobs of the list, it is so satisfying. But 5 days in harbour, we were ready to go!

Another cold swim 🥶 🏊‍♀️ -just because we can- a nice sail in the MOB boat 🚣‍♀️-just for the good testing of the crane- and the oars… (no comment) – 3151 tons of wood pulp in the hold and a lot of fun with the crew lashing with airbags (big bags fill with the air compressor to avoid the cargo from moving or falling and getting damaged while at sea) the cargo.

We have two different kinds of wood pulp one seems to be in sheets very compact and the second one is more fluffy and gets damaged easily. They do diapers, masks, tampons and stuff like that with it. It is interesting to be part of the production line when you think of it 🤔

Every day passes and everyday small improvements and big fun. This is how it is supposed to be. And I live it. There is not one day I have woken up wondering why I came here. 🤪crazy Sophie.

Our lupine forest 🌱 🌸 🌳 is getting bigger and bigger and it is obvious now to be that we need to do something: over 38 seeds potentially growing up to 1,20m each in half a plastic bottle… yeah 🤦🏻‍♀️…
