INTERNSHIP ~ Week 6 🚢 ⚓️✌🏻

INTERNSHIP ~ Week 6 🚢 ⚓️✌🏻

Yet another challenging week went by.

We visited two harbours: Warrenpoint in Northern Ireland to discharge, the soja bean meal we had from Russia and with full ballast, sailed to Limerick in Ireland 🇮🇪. It was funny to see how they hoisted a bobcat in the hold to scoop everything! It looks like a fun toy to play with and from the deck like a little lego car! 😂 We said goodbye to our chief officer too.

Entering the river to Limerick with no wind

My first challenge was (and might still be! ) showing who I am and getting used to the new one. I find it difficult to get used to people. I do not share and do not want to because I know it is not going to last long and I do not want to get hurt by sharing, caring, and then leaving again. It always seems like it is all for nothing. Especially the ones I do care for, I can get really deeply attached to people which makes my heart feel sometimes so heavy when I think of them or miss them.

Such a beautiful sunset on the river

Also working wise, once again I have to show that no, I am not like a normal trainee and that I actually have experience… it feels like starting all over again.

There is always a rainbow showing up where there is rain and sun

The other challenge was that I got from school that I still had to do a few reports. Good that I asked. If I hadn’t I probably wouldn’t have known…😑🔫grrr. Always something to do on top of it. And of course, these need to be done before the last month I am onboard so…. for soon haha 😆 but I know I’ll get it done. It’s just… frustrating.

Then, when in Limerick, I was in charge of the loading: like a big girl, emptying all the ballast by myself, loading at the same time, the books, the draughts, and the voyage planning, the hatches….

My first loading operation. : RDF

Well, I had fun in the engine room again with the captain while the others were grocery shopping for the vessel… I learned a lot and even though it wasn’t difficult, and as I am a Sophie, I just want everything to be good from the first time… putting my self-pressure! 😉 but… it went more than good. A good example of my new job!✌🏻

Happy deballasting in the engine room

The last challenge is that I got a year older….. and I am not so sure I like that. I feel young so I am still young. Age. Is. A. Number. 😱 but I got a great 🎂 🙂 ♥️ and I am so grateful for all the messages. 🙂

Happy Birthday ”Sopie”… Where my nickname started…

Now off to Sweden! ✌🏻♥️⚓ @ Limerick, Ireland

INTERNSHIP ~ Week 4. 🚢 ⚓️✌🏻

We are still in Russia 🇷🇺! Probably only for the next couple of days…. we will soon be loading and heading to Ireland 🇮🇪:)

Are you sure youet the trainee do it? 😉

This week was another week in drydock with again some new stuff: playing on the main engine 🙌🏻 or hide and seek in the double bottom tanks… (kidding… ~ i was just checking out 😉 )

Checking double bottom ballast water tanks

The ship is nicely and freshly painted: all nice and shiny but we now still have quite some work on deck to do to make it shiny there too ;).

The drydock crew in Kaliningrad

We had the chance to go to town again which was nice but studies came over rolling as a tough reminder that I am a student again and trying to fit a full two years study in 6 month 💪🏻 well…. can be a bit of pressure when you are a Sophie! 📚

A future officer checking the hull in drydock

I had my first tough challenge in the middle of the week: cumulation of not enough sleep, a bit of pressure and the hard feeling of beeing a “cadet” or just a trainee when i am so used to being responsible and running things… it is not always easy to hear people telling you they are being patient explaining you things that you already know and that they are your superior… Yes 😑… kind reminder to myself that when I cannot be a normal 200% and just a 50% then people apparently start worrying 🙇🏻‍♀️when I just need to be me and let me be…

I am now missing one happy picture in my daily challenge (because of the challenging day) but I am now back on track. People actually care and that make me happy to see. Thank you ♥️.

Ruyter in drydock

Drydock 👩🏻‍🔧is now over and lets get the fun going again : soya bean meel and sailing, back into normal ship routine, I wonder what is coming up this week! 🤪

Happy trainee

Make space. Here i come! @ Калининград

My last week onboard Europa came as fast as i thought it would and I turned the page last week already. I do not know yet when I will join again. In september I am starting my all ships course with anninternship onboard a cargo vessel for three month. Hopefully after that I will be back! Who knows!?

It has been such a great life experience. Again and again I keep on learning how to live with others in such small community.

Leaving a great few days sailing ⛵️ with a great friend in lovely danish waters 🇩🇰 behind to finally soon put my bag down.

Between 30knots wind, swimcalls 🏊‍♀️ in freezing cold water (i really enjoy that!), unlimited fish buffet, full day sailing and nice walks… quite a few challenging moments, as usual, of course otherwise life would be so boring right 🤪 ?

It turns out I actually also do like small boat sailing too! And someone said it “suited” me! In that case…. 😂 I still wouldnt mind dropping all those challenges for some time, together with my bag and having nothing even close to sophielike happening to me!

A last sunset in harbour

thank you all for reading me these past weeks! I am going home to rest now :)✌🏻 ⚓️ ♥️

Heading to the airport!
