Week 10.

Week 10.

After Horta we had a couple of weeks of good sailing.

We had to refamiliarize new voyage crew memebers and put the ones that stayed onboard since Cape Town in a leading position. It is always nice to see that some of the young voyage crew that have been working hard with us for the past two month are rewarded this way. Sometime, they even become volonteers for us and it is great because we have the feeling they accomplished something for themselves by joining the ship.

Happy chief officer

It is for sure a life changing experience for them! Lots of learning moments and the curve goes way higher on a tall ship out at sea.

Magical colours in the clouds

The trip from Horta to Europe mainland always takes a pprox 10 days and is always filled with a lot more sail handling. We also start to feel the cold … the tropics are now way behind and we have to get used to it again!

Europa sailing close hold in well formed seas
Sunsets…

Sailing is fun!

Europa at anchor near the isle of Wight

We are heading to Rouen in France where i am looking forward to meet my parents for half a day. But before that we might sailing along the south of England looking for some shelter for the strong winds coming!

Week 6.

Week 6.

Oh hello northern hemisphere again! Hello squalls, showers, north easterly winds and clouds! Bye bye stunsails!

Europa’s bridge at night

After a great equator crossing ceremony, we have been able to welcome quite a few new shellbacks on Europa. A swimcall sounded very necessary to rinse off some of the pollywogs crimes… but mainly the last bits of slob in the remaining hair… 😉

The grateful moment of enjoying the view of the ship you are sailing on… while she is sailing!

The last days of last week were pretty busy with maintenance but luckily we had the chance to launch one of the zodiacs and take turns on the ocean to view the vessel sailing away. This was as usual an awesome experience as it is not very often that one can see the vessel he is sailing on from a different perspective!

Bark Europa

A lot of maintenance is happening. I have been assigned the task to revarnish the board names of the vessel that are normally screwed on the stern of the vessel… quite some sanding, preping and layers of varnish to apply before they will be hung up again in Horta.

Bark Europa

Did you know the writting was made of real gold? I hope I will not mess it up! 😉 …

Week 3.

Week 3.

Saint Helena- Jamestown.

At anchor in front of Jamestown, Saint-Helena Island, South Atlantic Ocean

Already my 4th or 5th time here but It is still as enjoyable.

A rough Island from the outside…

Again I climbed those 699 steep- very steep- stairs of Jacobs ladder. The record is 5 minutes something. Trust me … NOT my record haha but taking my time with picture brakes, around 10 minutes later i am up… with shaky legs! 😉 💪🏻

Jacob’s ladder

The view is incredible on Jamestown. A cute little town with quite some history.

Jamestown, main street

For a French person, Saint Helena is quite a place to be as Napoleon spent here his last years…. The island seems rough from the outside but very green inside with lots of tropical trees and flowers. I love this place! It gives wings! 😉

and of course… I had to stop by and check out on out on our two caf polos from years 2016-17 and 17-18! Still there… but a bit dusty… haha! Such good memories! 🙂

Our class afloat gifts to our « safe place » where we would spend hours on internet and having dinner and drinks

And of course…. I am a sophie, I cannot help it…postcards are a must as I miss you!

My Posted at Sea addiction

Tomorrow we heave up anchor and set sail to Ascension Island ! I will be in Captain Klaas’s watch… like in the old days! He is one of the best captain’s I ever had and I enjoy his presence a lot!

Once again I cannot wait! ⚓️ ♥️
